Main Aims/Objectives
The general goals of UC Prevention in Mental Health (PMH) is to:
Promote knowledge and skills regarding the preventive practice in Clinical Psychology.
Understand the relevance to intervene before the development of clinical conditions;
Locate preventive interventions for the development of clinical operation;
Understand the paradigmatic, disciplinary and theoretical foundations of PMH;
Develop critical understanding of the potential and constraints of PMH approaches and intervention
Specific Aims/Objectives
Understand the paradigmatic, disciplinary and theoretical foundations of PMH;
Become aware of the need to support PMH interventions on research evidences;
Know the main mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of preventive interventions in mental health;
Knowing preventive interventions empirically validated for different clinical conditions;
Plan, develop, implement and evaluate preventive interventions for specific conditions, contexts and
populations;
Skills to be acquired
Competences of exploration of preventive interventions empirically validated for different conditions.
Competencies of exploration of the components and processes of conception and implementation of preventive interventions.
Competences of design and planning of preventive interventions based on research evidence.
Competences of practice and preventive intervention in Clinical Psychology based on research evidence.
Teaching Procedures
The teaching methodologies combine expositive, participatory and interactive
methodologies. The contents will be explored through oral exposure, content media projection, group discussion and the Moodle platform. Examples of preventive interventions will be analyzed and discussed in small and large group and in the forums of the Moodle platform.
Programme
1.Prevention in Mental Health (PMH): concepts, paradigms, and typologies; social justice and socio-economic benefits of the PMH;
2.Approaches to PMH: contextual; interactionists; developmental psychopathology; psychobiological; models specific to conditions;
3.PMH mechanisms: Self-regulation, Empowerment, Self-determination; subjective wellbeing, social support and knowledge;
5.PMH in different contexts: community, school, family, workplace;
6. PMH throughout the life cycle;
7.Empirically validated preventive interventions for specific conditions: behavioural disorders, anxiety,
depression, suicide, violence in intimate relationships, sexual risk behaviors; abuse and substance
dependence;
8.Design and implementation of interventions in PSM: identification, evaluation, delineation, and
conceptualization of the target condition; conceptual framework; target population; context; conception and design of the intervention; implementation, evaluation;
Evaluation Type
Students must have a minimum attendance of 70% to classes. Continuous evaluation consists of individual work (design of a preventive intervention to tackle a specific condition, in a specific age range) to deliver at the end of the semester (60% of the final grade). At the end of the semester, students will take the final exam (40% of the note classification).
