To understand the scientific status of forensic sciences.
To know methods and techniques of experimental and clinical forensic sciences.
Specific Aims/Objectives
At the end of the curricular unit, students should be able to:
- Delimit the field of forensic sciences and understand its historical evolution.
- Understand the relationship between forensic sciences and criminology.
- Know methods and techniques of experimental and clinical forensic sciences.
Skills to be acquired
To acquire theoretical and practical knowledge related to expert practice in forensic science.

Expositive and demonstrative method and practical work.

1. The scientific status of forensic sciences
1.1. Historical evolution: from undifferentiation to specialization
1.2. The need to distinguish between criminology, forensic sciences, criminalistics and legal medicine
2. Methods and techniques: experimental forensic sciences and clinical forensic sciences
3. Cooperation between criminology and forensic sciences in the definition and resolution of social problems
4. The current state of forensic sciences at the international level and the Portuguese situation
